Buyer’s Guide to Pokémon TCG Scarlet & Violet

There are few Pokémon TCG sets that have had quite as much hype as Scarlet & Violet. With the success of their eponymous Switch games, there are even more players clamoring for the total Pokémon experience, and from the looks of things S&V will not disappoint.

Set in the Spain-inspired Paldea region, S&V is bringing some beautiful aesthetics into the game, including a bountiful array of special art and foil treatments. More than that, the return of the fan-favorite ex mechanic is sure to bring power to your table. While the price of booster packs is changing to reflect inflation, The Pokémon Company International is also making Scarlet & Violet products more exciting to open by guaranteeing three foils in every pack.

However, this begs the question, “What should I be buying from Scarlet & Violet?” There are a number of sealed products to pick from, and I’m happy to help point you toward the best value.

Booster packs are essentially the perfect way to fill out your collection, especially in the first few weeks of release. While I may traditionally recommend buying singles instead of packs, I will be the first to admit that there is something irreplaceable about the excitement you get from cracking packs.

This is particularly true of Scarlet & Violet, as there are a huge number of beautiful alternate art treatments that you can potentially pull from the set. The chance to pull some beautiful game pieces that may well be worth dollars makes packs a more than safe place to start.

Booster Boxes: When it comes to actually getting the best bang for your buck, buying an entire S&V booster box is unquestionably the best way to go about it. Early, before all of the biggest chase cards are identified, can be one of the best times to grab a box and see what kind of profit you can ultimately make.

This set is expected to be very popular, so I wouldn’t expect prices for boxes to stay this low, so getting in on the ground floor is definitely something I wholeheartedly recommend.

Not quite as much value as buying a box, but you can easily pick these up at big box retailers. For collectors, the value isn’t necessarily in the packs found here. Instead you get the added bonus of the full-art legendary card, assorted extra goodies, and a decent storage box for your cards.
